Gyeongnam Provincial Council Chairman Kim Soon-taek stages picket protest against relocation of Naval Academy
Recently, Kim Soon-taek, Chairman of the Culture and Welfare Committee of the Gyeongsangnam-do Provincial Council, staged a one-person picket protest against the hasty integration and relocation plan of the Korea Naval Academy. Despite the sweltering heat continuing day after day, Chairman Kim continued his activities in front of the provincial government office to highlight the injustice of this relocation plan.
Chairman Kim pointed out the negative impact the relocation of the Naval Academy would have on the local community and the unilateral promotion process without sufficient discussion as key issues. He argued that given the historical symbolism of the academy and its contribution to the local economy, such a hasty decision should be approached with caution.
This protest is drawing significant attention from local residents and stakeholders. Many citizens are expressing concerns that the relocation of the academy could shake the region's identity, and there is a growing demand for transparent information disclosure and a public deliberation process.
Gyeongsangnam-do and relevant organizations are currently collecting various opinions on this matter. Many are now focusing on how the issue of the Naval Academy's relocation will be resolved, hoping it will move beyond local conflict.
