IEA Executive Director: "South Korea is a Model Country for Energy Transition"
Recently, Fatih Birol, Executive Director of the International Energy Agency (IEA), praised South Korea as a model country for energy transition. Executive Director Birol pointed out that the world is currently experiencing an energy crisis due to the war in the Middle East, and stated that countries are making efforts to protect their energy security.
Executive Director Birol explained that to avoid experiencing another energy crisis caused by external factors like the Middle East war, the world is choosing 'electrification' as a core response strategy. He emphasized that within this shift, the policy efforts shown by South Korea and its process of transitioning to renewable energy are serving as a good example for other countries.
However, the difficulties encountered during the energy transition process were also mentioned. The instability of the international situation, such as the Middle East war, can be a factor that slows down the speed of the transition to renewable energy or increases the economic burden. Accordingly, securing a stable energy supply chain is emerging as a global challenge.
Experts advise that South Korea should continue to consistently pursue policies that increase energy efficiency and expand the proportion of renewable energy. It remains to be seen whether South Korea can further solidify its position as an energy powerhouse based on this positive assessment from the international community.
