Mass Arrest of Chinese Crew Members for Illegal Fishing Near the West Sea NLL
Recently, a large number of Chinese fishing boat crew members were arrested by the Korea Coast Guard for illegal fishing in waters near the Northern Limit Line (NLL) in the West Sea. They are accused of entering our waters without permission and engaging in illegal activities while anchored.
This crackdown drew attention as, unlike previous operations, not only the captains but also a large number of regular crew members were arrested. The Coast Guard carried out a rigorous crackdown to eradicate illegal fishing and proceeded with legal procedures after securing evidence at the scene.
The West Sea NLL area is a vital region directly linked to the livelihoods of our fishermen. However, the continuous illegal fishing by Chinese vessels has caused ongoing damage to our fishermen, and maritime safety issues have been consistently raised.
The government and the Coast Guard plan to further strengthen crackdowns to protect our waters in the future. They stated that they will respond strictly to illegal activities to defend the sovereignty of our seas and ensure the safety of our fishermen.
