Bank of Korea raises base interest rate by 0.25%p for the first time in 3 years and 6 months
The Bank of Korea's Monetary Policy Board announced on the 16th that it would raise the base interest rate by 0.25 percentage points, from the existing 2.50% to 2.75% per annum. This decision marks the first interest rate hike in approximately 3 years and 6 months since January 2023.
This interest rate hike appears to be the result of comprehensively considering the recent economic situation and inflationary pressures. The Bank of Korea explained that it made this decision to promote stable economic growth and maintain price stability.
When the base interest rate rises, it is highly likely that loan interest rates at commercial banks will also increase. Consequently, the interest burden on households and businesses currently using loans is expected to be greater than before.
Attention is focused on how this measure will affect the domestic economy and the lives of ordinary citizens in the future. The Bank of Korea plans to continue monitoring domestic and international economic conditions closely while managing its monetary policy.
