Urgent Need for Consumer Redress Measures… Settlement Rate Remains in the 50% Range

With the number of consumer redress applications steadily increasing recently, there is a growing call for the development of effective countermeasures. The government and relevant agencies are being urged to play an active role in resolving the various damages experienced by consumers.

According to data compiled as of August 2026, the total number of consumer redress applications reached 40,248. Of these, only 20,889 cases were resolved through amicable settlements, resulting in a settlement rate of just 54.9%.

With 3,979 cases currently being processed, it still takes a significant amount of time for affected consumers to receive redress. It has been pointed out that many consumers suffer damages without receiving proper compensation or face difficulties during the resolution process.

Assemblyman Min Byung-duk emphasized that current redress measures are insufficient compared to the growing scale of consumer damage. He argued that a faster and more effective redress system must be established so that consumers can receive practical assistance.

Attention is now focused on whether institutional improvements will be made to protect consumer rights. The government and relevant authorities must work to improve redress procedures and create an environment where consumers can engage in economic activities with peace of mind.
