Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries Launches Intensive Cleanup of Coastal Debris Following Heavy Rains

The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries is launching special cleanup activities to address the debris that has washed up on coastlines across the country due to the recent prolonged rainy season and heavy downpours. This initiative will be designated and operated as the 'Marine Debris Cleanup Week Immediately Following Heavy Rains' for approximately two weeks, from July 20 to 31.

During this cleanup week, various relevant organizations, including local governments, the Korea Coast Guard, and the Korea Marine Environment Management Corporation, will collaborate. They plan to carry out large-scale collection operations focusing on major ports, beaches, and coastal areas where significant amounts of debris have accumulated.

In particular, plastics, tree branches, and discarded fishing gear that have flowed into the sea due to the recent heavy rains can threaten marine ecosystems and disrupt vessel navigation. The government aims to minimize marine pollution through prompt collection and provide a clean environment for citizens visiting the sea during the summer vacation season.

An official from the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries explained that this cleanup activity is an important measure to maintain a clean ocean, going beyond simply removing trash. They also stated that they plan to continue to thoroughly monitor the generation of marine debris according to weather conditions and respond promptly in the future.

the government plans to dispose of the waste collected during this cleanup period according to proper procedures. They also urged citizens to demonstrate mature civic awareness, such as not littering on the coast, to help create a clean ocean.
