Government to Enhance Convenience for Overseas Voters… Pushing for Mail-in Ballots and More Polling Stations
The South Korean government recently announced that it will improve the election system to help overseas citizens participate in voting. Currently, while our citizens living abroad have a strong desire to vote, they face difficulties in actually participating due to the distance to polling stations or complex procedures.
Accordingly, the government is preparing concrete measures to increase the accessibility of overseas elections. In particular, it plans to expand the installation of polling stations to address the shortage of polling locations, which has been pointed out as the biggest issue. Furthermore, it is actively considering the introduction of mail-in voting for overseas citizens who live far from polling stations.
This measure was discussed during a briefing on diplomatic and security affairs. A government official emphasized that it is important to refine the system so that overseas citizens can exercise their precious right to vote as South Korean nationals, regardless of where they are. This reflects a commitment to guaranteeing the suffrage of overseas citizens and realizing the values of democracy.
Moving forward, the government plans to establish specific implementation plans and continue consultations with relevant ministries. If these institutional improvements are successfully implemented, it is expected that many of our citizens living abroad will be able to participate in elections more conveniently.
