President Lee Jae-myung Orders Preparation of Improvement Measures to Resolve Delivery Platform Fee Issues

On the 25th, President Lee Jae-myung ordered the government to prepare countermeasures to resolve the burden of delivery fees currently faced by self-employed individuals. President Lee pointed out that the delivery platform market is currently structured in a way where a small number of companies hold a monopoly, which has led to excessively high fees.

Many self-employed individuals are experiencing significant financial difficulties due to the high brokerage fees and delivery costs incurred when selling food through delivery apps. In particular, small business owners have complained that even when their sales increase, they feel a heavy burden in their operations because the actual profit remaining after paying the fees is minimal.

President Lee determined that this monopolistic and oligopolistic system is threatening the right to survival of the self-employed. Accordingly, the government plans to review concrete measures to reasonably improve the fee structure through consultations with delivery platform companies and to reduce the burden on small business owners.

Moving forward, the government plans to foster a fair competitive environment in the delivery platform market and promote policies that allow self-employed individuals and platform companies to coexist. Attention is now focused on whether this directive will lead to a practical easing of delivery fee issues and an improvement in the business environment for the self-employed.
