Record-Breaking Heatwave Leads to Surge in Nationwide Power Consumption… Caution Advised for Energy Management
Due to the record-breaking heatwaves and tropical nights that have struck the entire Korean Peninsula this summer, nationwide power consumption is rising sharply. As the use of air conditioning increases due to the relentless heat, power demand is hitting record highs.
According to reports from major media outlets such as News1, the maximum daily power demand for the last week of July was higher than during the same period last year. In particular, power consumption is not easily decreasing as the tropical night phenomenon, where temperatures do not drop even at night, continues alongside the daytime heat.
The government and the Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) are maintaining an emergency response system while monitoring power supply reserves. To prevent power outages caused by sudden electrical overloads, they are urging citizens to maintain appropriate indoor cooling temperatures and refrain from unnecessary electricity use.
Experts emphasize that citizens need to exercise special caution as the sweltering heat is expected to continue for the time being. In particular, it is important for the elderly and outdoor workers to take care of their health as they are susceptible to heat-related illnesses, and for everyone to participate in energy conservation by avoiding peak hours of power usage.
