South Korea and Mexico Push to Resume FTA Negotiations to Strengthen Economic Cooperation
The South Korean government recently expressed its commitment to further strengthening economic cooperation with Mexico. South Korea views Mexico as a highly important strategic partner in trade and investment and is striving to take the relationship between the two countries to the next level.
The government emphasized that the first priority is to restart the free trade agreement (FTA) negotiations between South Korea and Mexico, which had been suspended. As the negotiations that officially began in 2006 did not proceed smoothly, the plan is to create an environment where companies from both countries can interact more freely through these renewed discussions.
In addition, it was decided to actively pursue the conclusion of a social security agreement, beyond just economic cooperation. This is a measure to reduce the social security burden on workers employed in both countries and to support stable economic activities. Along with this, institutional mechanisms to protect corporate investments will also be further strengthened.
These cooperation plans are aimed at making it easier for South Korean companies to enter the Mexican market and creating opportunities for both countries to grow together. Much attention is now focused on how the specific negotiations will proceed in the future.
