FKTU Firefighters' Union Urges Introduction of Health Management System for Retired Firefighters
At a recent forum held at the Gyeonggi Provincial Council, the Gyeonggi headquarters of the Federation of Korean Trade Unions (FKTU) Firefighters' Union strongly urged the introduction of a health management system for retired firefighters. As firefighters are frequently exposed to hazardous environments while on duty, there is growing demand for systematic health management even after retirement.
Participants at the forum pointed out that many firefighters suffer from illnesses after retirement due to exposure to hazardous substances and the physical and mental stress experienced during their service. While a health check-up system currently exists for active-duty firefighters, such support is lacking after they retire.
The union argued that relevant laws should be amended to ensure retired firefighters receive appropriate medical support from the state and that a dedicated health management system should be established. They emphasized that this is not only a matter of improving the welfare of firefighters but also a minimum gesture of respect for those who have dedicated themselves to public safety.
Gyeonggi Provincial Council and relevant authorities stated that they would review the opinions raised at the forum to find ways to improve the system. It appears urgent to develop concrete policies to ensure that the right to health for firefighters extends beyond their active service years.
