President Lee orders additional vetting for inaugural head of the Serious Investigation Agency
President Lee has ordered additional vetting for lawyer Kim Ji-yong, who was nominated as the inaugural head of the Serious Investigation Agency. This measure appears to be a decision made in consideration of various opinions raised within political circles following the nomination.
Previously, while on a state visit to France on the 8th, President Lee nominated Kim Ji-yong (58), a lawyer at the law firm Apex, as the inaugural head of the agency upon the recommendation of the Minister of the Interior and Safety.
However, following the nomination, concerns and opposition regarding the candidate emerged, particularly among hardliners within the ruling party. The Presidential Office has decided to closely re-examine the vetting process for the candidate, taking into account this political situation and the burden of public opinion.
This instruction for additional vetting is interpreted as an intention to more firmly confirm the candidate's suitability. The government plans to proceed with future appointment procedures cautiously based on the results of this vetting.
As the Serious Investigation Agency is a newly established organization aimed at strengthening national investigative capabilities, there is significant interest in the selection of its inaugural head. Public attention is focused on what decision the government will make moving forward.
