Supreme Court Wine Purchase Controversy: Over 20 Million Won Spent Since Chief Justice Cho Hee-dae Took Office
The Supreme Court has recently come under political scrutiny after it was revealed that it had purchased large quantities of wine using official business expenses over the past few years. The Democratic Party of Korea, in particular, has raised its voice in criticism, pointing to the Supreme Court's budget execution records.
According to the disclosed data, the total amount spent by the Supreme Court on wine purchases from 2017 to the present reaches 108.94 million won. Of this, approximately 26.19 million won was spent between last December, when Chief Justice Cho Hee-dae took office, and the present.
Regarding this matter, the Democratic Party of Korea argued that the Supreme Court must use its budget more prudently to uphold the trust of the judiciary. However, some have raised counterarguments, stating that these expenses were used for official diplomatic events or business-related hospitality.
This controversy has once again sparked social interest in the standards for the use of business expenses by public institutions. Many citizens are expressing the opinion that tax money should be used transparently and appropriately.
The Supreme Court explained that the wine purchases were made for official business purposes in accordance with relevant regulations. Attention is now focused on how much more transparently the budget execution process of public institutions will be managed in the future.
