A 'History Book of the Land' Completed After 100 Years… National Basic Geological Map Finished
The Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources (KIGAM) has completed the 'National Basic Geological Map,' which contains geological information about the land of Korea, after 100 years of work. A geological map is a chart that shows what kinds of rocks and strata exist underground, and it serves as an important resource that systematically organizes the nation's geological data.
The newly completed geological map records the geological information of the entire Korean territory in detail at a scale of 1:50,000. It is like a book recording the history of the land, providing great help in understanding how our territory was formed.
Beyond simply showing the shape of the land, the geological map will be utilized in various fields. It serves as essential foundational data for national industrial development, such as ensuring ground stability during construction projects like roads and tunnels, developing groundwater, and exploring mineral resources.
Furthermore, based on the results of this research, KIGAM will conduct joint research with China to prevent desertification in Northeast Asia. Through this, it is expected to contribute to reducing the yellow dust and fine dust that plague Korea every spring.
Completed after 100 years of dedicated effort, this geological map will serve as a new milestone in the management of the Republic of Korea's territory. We look forward to this data playing a major role in protecting our environment and creating a safer nation.
