United States reaffirms Spanish sovereignty over Ceuta and Melilla
The United States government issued an official statement this Thursday to clarify its position on Spain's sovereignty over the autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla. This declaration follows concerns raised by previous comments that had cast doubt on the American recognition of these territories as an integral part of the Spanish state.
In its message, Washington clearly confirmed that it considers Ceuta and Melilla to be territories under Spanish sovereignty. With this clarification, U.S. authorities seek to eliminate any diplomatic ambiguity and reaffirm the strength of the bilateral relationship between the two countries, which are key allies within NATO.
However, the statement also included a criticism of the Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez. According to the U.S. administration, the Spanish executive has not defended the position of these cities with sufficient firmness on the international stage, which, in its view, has allowed unnecessary misunderstandings regarding their territorial status to arise.
This episode highlights the importance of foreign policy in relation to the borders of southern Europe. The Spanish government has not yet issued a detailed official response to the criticism received from Washington, although the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is expected to address the matter in the coming days to put an end to any debate regarding the country's territorial integrity.
