Resident doctors in Spain demand better working conditions
The president of the MIR Spain association, Jesús Arzúa Moya, has recently raised his voice to demand an urgent improvement in the working conditions of resident doctors in hospitals across the country. This request highlights the challenges faced by professionals who are in their stage of specialized training within the public healthcare system.
According to the association, resident doctors currently endure an excessive workload that affects both their personal well-being and the quality of care received by patients. Arzúa Moya has pointed out that it is essential to establish more rigorous and effective supervision over on-call hours and the responsibilities assigned to these professionals during their years of residency.
The MIR collective argues that, although training is an essential part of their work, it should not come at the expense of the workers' mental or physical health. Therefore, they are requesting that health authorities review contracts and supervision protocols, in order to ensure that Spanish hospitals have a safer and more balanced work environment.
This demand adds to a broader debate on the sustainability of the healthcare system in Spain and the need to retain young talent. Resident representatives hope that this appeal will serve to open a dialogue with the Ministry of Health and the autonomous communities, seeking concrete solutions that improve day-to-day life in hospital centers throughout the national territory.
