Unai Sordo backs Yolanda Díaz's candidacy to lead the ILO
The Secretary General of Comisiones Obreras (CCOO), Unai Sordo, has publicly expressed his support for the Second Deputy Prime Minister of Spain, Yolanda Díaz, in her potential bid to lead the International Labour Organization (ILO).
Sordo highlighted that Díaz's track record in the labor sector and her commitment to workers' rights make her a suitable figure to represent Spain in such an internationally significant organization. According to the union leader, this candidacy would be a positive step toward strengthening Spanish influence in global institutions.
The CCOO leader also underscored the importance of protecting and reinforcing the ILO in the face of current political challenges. In particular, Sordo referred to the need to defend social dialogue and labor rights against the rise of political trends that, according to him, could weaken social protection structures worldwide.
The ILO is a United Nations agency responsible for promoting rights at work and fostering decent employment opportunities. The possibility of a Spanish politician holding this position has generated interest in political and trade union circles, as it would represent recognition of the labor reforms implemented in Spain in recent years.
For the moment, this proposal is in a phase of debate and political support. It is expected that the steps to be taken will be clarified in the coming months to determine whether Yolanda Díaz's candidacy will be formalized before the competent international bodies.
