Most Spaniards believe technological dependence threatens European security
A new report titled 'Digital Sovereignty in Europe 2026', conducted by Fundación Telefónica and Metroscopia, shows growing concern in Spain. According to the study, the majority of citizens believe that relying excessively on technology from other countries represents a risk to the continent's security.
The study's data is very clear: 62% of Spaniards believe that the lack of technological independence endangers European stability. Furthermore, the importance of achieving digital sovereignty is an almost unanimous sentiment in the country, with 86% support among citizens and 91% among Spanish companies.
This concept of digital sovereignty refers to Europe's ability to develop its own technology, manage its infrastructures, and protect its inhabitants' data. Currently, a large part of the digital services used in Spain come from major powers such as the United States or China, which raises doubts about who truly has control over sensitive information.
In conclusion, the report highlights the urgent need for Spain and the European Union to invest more in innovation and local talent. For Spanish society, strengthening its own technological industry is not just a matter of economics, but a strategic priority to ensure a more secure, private, and autonomous future in the digital world.
