Current Affairs in Spain: Political Tensions, Asturian Economy, and Regional News
The political landscape in Spain is going through a moment of great turmoil. The Socialist Party (PSOE) is seeking to protect the figure of President Pedro Sánchez against accusations suggesting that Santos Cerdán may have misled management to pay false invoices. At the same time, the Government is watching with concern the future testimony of former President José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero before the judge, in a context marked by doubts about alleged irregularities and unexplained valuables.
Within the government coalition, the Sumar party is also facing an internal crisis following the departure of Yolanda Díaz. Currently, there is a leadership struggle between the general secretary and the spokesperson in Congress, a division that will be resolved in the key assembly next July. Furthermore, in the international sphere, it has been reported that Spain is failing to comply with eight of the nine measures necessary to implement the European Union's new Migration and Asylum Pact, despite having been one of its main advocates.
In the judicial field, deputy Isaura Leal is at the center of the controversy due to her alleged influence in institutions such as Correos and SEPI. According to some reports, Leal met with former Attorney General Dolores Delgado to discuss issues related to the 'Aznalcóllar' case, although Delgado has flatly denied this meeting. For its part, the Association of Prosecutors has shown its indignation at what they consider insufficient explanations from the Attorney General's Office regarding these matters.
Regarding news of incidents, there is significant relief in Andalusia. The Infoca Plan has managed to stabilize the forest fire in Villanueva de los Castillejos, in Huelva, after the flames affected more than 5,000 hectares. The 370 people who were evacuated have already been able to return to their homes and the main roads have been reopened, although work is still underway to ensure total control of the fire.
In the economic sector, the solid commercial relationship between the Principality of Asturias and Mexico stands out. In the last four years, the volume of business between both territories exceeded 2.235 billion euros. According to official data, more than 70% of this economic activity is concentrated in the technology and engineering sectors, which demonstrates the importance of the Mexican market for Asturian companies.
Finally, in the social and educational sphere, teachers in the Valencian Community have voted in favor of suspending the strike in public education. However, the unions clarify that this does not mean they accept the regional government's proposal, which continues to be rejected by the majority. On the other hand, in Asturias, the residents of Villaviciosa are preparing to celebrate the traditional night of San Juan at the Mirador de los Ximielgos, where they will enjoy a brotherhood dinner with views of the Cantabrian Sea.
