Current Affairs in Spain: Judicial Decisions, Radio Changes, and Extreme Weather
The Supreme Court of Spain has decided not to suspend the regularization of more than 550,000 immigrants. The Vox party and the Community of Madrid had requested to halt this process due to the potential negative impact on public services and social spending. However, the court rejected the petition because it considered that the organizations filing the appeal did not have the necessary legal standing to stop this massive measure.
In the judicial and political sphere, Judge Juan Carlos Peinado has rejected the appeal from Begoña Gómez, the wife of the Prime Minister. Gómez accused the judge of violating her right to a defense, but the magistrate has decided to dismiss these allegations. On the other hand, the commission of inquiry into the Cerredo mining accident has published its final report. The report points to the responsibility of former councilors and officials for their involvement or lack of action in the tragedy where five miners died.
A piece of news that has surprised the media world is the departure of journalist Àngels Barceló from the SER network. After 21 years working at the station and leading the morning program "Hoy por Hoy," her departure represents a historic change for Spanish radio. Barceló was one of the most influential and recognized voices in current journalism.
The weather is also a major focus today due to extreme situations. Asturias has recorded record temperatures for a month of May, exceeding 36 degrees in Gijón, a figure higher than in southern cities like Córdoba. However, the day is expected to end with strong storms and winds. Meanwhile, in Almería, a large deployment of aerial resources is working to control a forest fire unusual for this time of year, which has forced the pre-emergency level to be maintained.
Regarding the environment and urban planning, the Community of Madrid has installed a spectacular 100-square-meter optical illusion in Puerta del Sol. This anamorphic work of art aims to raise awareness among citizens about water scarcity and the importance of caring for this natural resource. The installation can be visited until July 19th.
In Asturias, the Vox party has expressed its firm rejection of the creation of "stressed zones" to control rental prices in neighborhoods of Gijón and Avilés. The political group claims that this measure is an attack on private property and will only serve to worsen housing problems. Additionally, the Secretary of State for Transport, José Antonio Santano, visited Gijón to explain that, for legal and economic reasons, the government currently has no plans to eliminate the Huerna toll.
Finally, the academic community has paid an emotional and massive tribute to Professor Mario Díaz at the University of Oviedo. Díaz, who passed away recently, was a pioneer in the creation of university master's degrees and in fostering the union between the academic world and businesses. His colleagues highlighted his great legacy and the need to follow his example in higher education.
