Zapatero defends the origin of the jewels received from King Abdullah
The former Prime Minister of Spain, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, has spoken out once again regarding the controversy surrounding a set of jewels. According to his recent statements, these items were a personal gift given to him by the then-King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia.
The incident dates back to 2007, during an official visit the former Prime Minister made to the Arab country. According to Zapatero's version of events, the Saudi monarch presented him with these pieces as a gesture of diplomatic courtesy, a common practice in relations between heads of state and government.
The clarification comes following media interest sparked by the destination and origin of various institutional gifts received by high-ranking Spanish officials over the years. The former Prime Minister has insisted that the process of receiving this gift adhered to the regulations established at that time for such international meetings.
This case highlights the importance of transparency in the management of gifts received by public representatives. Although regulations have evolved over time to become stricter, Zapatero's statements seek to put to rest any doubts regarding the legality and nature of this exchange, which took place more than a decade ago.
