Thousands of people demonstrate in Mallorca against mass tourism
Last Sunday, tens of thousands of people took to the streets of Palma de Mallorca to protest against the current model of mass tourism. The demonstrators marched through the city center with the goal of demanding an urgent change in the management of the visitors the island receives each year.
Participants in the march expressed their concern about the negative impact that the excess of tourists has on the quality of life of local residents. Among the main complaints, citizens pointed to the saturation of public services, environmental degradation, and the constant pressure on the island's natural resources.
One of the central points of the protest was the housing crisis. The demonstrators denounced that the increase in tourist rentals has made apartment prices unaffordable for many Mallorcan families. For this reason, they demanded that local authorities implement stricter measures to limit the number of visitors and protect the right to decent housing for those who live there all year round.
This mobilization reflects a growing sentiment in various parts of Spain, where the debate over the limits of tourism has become a priority. The organizers of the protest hope that this act will serve to open a real dialogue with institutions and achieve a more sustainable economic model that does not depend solely on the massive arrival of travelers.
