Spain experiences a day of mass protests and political tensions against the Government
Thousands of people demonstrated this Saturday in Madrid's Plaza de Colón to call for the resignation of President Pedro Sánchez. Protesters denounce what they consider "unprecedented corruption" in the country's institutions. During the event, the leader of the People's Party, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, asserted that the current Government is "politically exhausted" and harshly criticized Sánchez's support for other party members.
The figure of former President José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero has been at the center of opposition criticism. Feijóo stated that Zapatero did not act alone in his business dealings but had the backing of the current Government. For his part, Santiago Abascal, leader of Vox, took advantage of the demonstration in Madrid to announce that his party has requested provisional prison for Zapatero before the National Court, increasing legal and political pressure on the former president.
In addition to the protests in the streets, the Government faces difficulties in the Congress of Deputies. Coalición Canaria has declared that its relationship with Pedro Sánchez is at a "critical point" after several recent disagreements. The Canarian party has even suggested the need for a vote of confidence, which casts doubt on the parliamentary support the Government needs to maintain the stability of the legislature.
In the healthcare sector, the situation is worrying in the south of the country due to labor conflicts. A doctors' strike in Andalusia has caused the cancellation of nearly 230,000 healthcare activities, including consultations, diagnostic tests, and operations, in just four days. Faced with this crisis, the regional government of Andalusia has formally requested the resignation of the Minister of Health, Mónica García, for the lack of management regarding the conflict.
On the other hand, a recent study in Asturias analyzes the future of its food industry, which represents more than 20% of the region's industrial fabric. The findings indicate that it is necessary to create shorter and more practical vocational training for young people. The main objective is to facilitate generational replacement and help the more than 600 companies in the sector adapt to new safety and competitiveness demands.
Finally, the city of Oviedo remembered its history with a special tribute to the heroes of the past. A historical reenactment of the 1808 uprising against the invasion of Napoleon Bonaparte's troops was held. With honor salutes and period uniforms, participants celebrated the courage of the Asturians who, more than two hundred years ago, decided to fight for their independence against the French army.
