Zaragoza and Benidorm selected as European Green Capital and Green Leaf for 2028
The European Commission recently announced that the Spanish cities of Zaragoza and Benidorm have been awarded the prestigious European Green Capital and European Green Leaf awards for the year 2028. This recognition highlights the commitment of both municipalities to sustainability, environmental improvement, and the quality of life of their citizens.
Zaragoza has been selected as the 2028 European Green Capital. The jury particularly valued the city's efforts to reduce its carbon emissions, its efficient waste management, and the creation of new urban green spaces. This title represents a significant boost for the Aragonese capital, which is positioning itself as a benchmark in the fight against climate change in Southern Europe.
For its part, Benidorm has received the 2028 European Green Leaf award, a category aimed at smaller cities that demonstrate a strong commitment to sustainable development. The Alicante city was awarded for its urban transformation projects, which seek to balance its high level of tourist activity with the protection of the natural environment and the improvement of energy efficiency in its infrastructure.
Both cities will receive European funding to finance new ecological projects. These awards not only represent recognition of the policies implemented so far, but also oblige the municipalities to continue working on innovative solutions to meet the European Union's climate goals for the next decade.
The official presentation of these awards will take place at a special ceremony organized by the European Commission. With these appointments, Spain strengthens its role in the ecological transition, demonstrating that both large capitals and tourist destinations can lead the change toward a way of life that is more respectful of the planet.
