A court investigates a lawyer for using artificial intelligence with false data
The High Court of Justice of Galicia (TSXG) has launched an investigation against a lawyer for an unusual reason. The professional used artificial intelligence tools to draft a legal appeal, but the final document contained serious errors. Specifically, the text included 24 citations of court rulings that do not exist in reality.
This phenomenon is known in the technology sector as "hallucinations." It occurs when artificial intelligence systems generate false information in a very convincing manner. In this case, the lawyer filed a motion for reconsideration before the judges, who discovered that the mentioned legal references were entirely invented by the computer program.
The Social Chamber of the court has decided to open a separate investigation to determine the lawyer's responsibilities. The magistrates consider that this error affects the integrity of the judicial process. It is one of the first cases in Spain where the use of technology in the legal field has ended in an official investigation for a lack of veracity.
The incident has sparked a debate about the use of technology in traditional professions. Although artificial intelligence can help save time, this case demonstrates the risks of not supervising the work of machines. Experts warn that professionals must always verify every piece of data before submitting it to a court.
Finally, the lawyer could face disciplinary sanctions for his conduct. This case will serve as an important precedent for regulating how legal professionals should use new digital tools. Spanish justice must now decide where technological assistance ends and professional negligence begins.
