Argentine scientists protest against research cuts
Hundreds of scientists, researchers, and students demonstrated this Wednesday in the streets of Buenos Aires. The goal of the protest was to express their rejection of the budget cuts in the science and technology sector implemented by the government of President Javier Milei.
The protesters gathered in front of the Ministry of Science with signs and Argentine flags. Many of the attendees wore the jerseys of the national soccer team, known as the 'Albiceleste,' as a symbol of unity and national pride in the face of the crisis affecting the academic sector.
The scientific community warns that these austerity measures jeopardize fundamental research projects and the future of thousands of workers in the sector. According to the organizers, the lack of funding not only affects laboratories but also causes a brain drain, as many young researchers are forced to seek opportunities abroad.
The government of Javier Milei, for its part, maintains that these cuts are necessary to achieve fiscal balance and reduce public state spending. The administration argues that the country must prioritize economic stability over other budgetary expenses.
The situation continues to generate significant tension in Argentina, as the international community watches closely to see how these decisions affect the country's technological development. For now, scientists have promised to continue their mobilizations until they receive a response from the Executive branch regarding the future of national science.
