Workplace absenteeism in Spain reaches record figures and affects the economy
Workplace absenteeism has become one of the main challenges for the Spanish economy during 2025. According to the latest published data, unplanned absences from the workplace have experienced a significant increase, which is generating growing concern among companies and public institutions.
Official figures indicate that the total cost of these absences has exceeded 59 billion euros. This amount represents 3.7% of the country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP), a figure that reflects the negative impact this situation has on national productivity and overall economic growth.
The report highlights that sick leave has risen by 11.7% compared to the previous year. This increase in medical absences is the main factor explaining the rise in absenteeism, forcing many companies to reorganize their teams and assume additional costs to maintain their usual operations.
Faced with this scenario, various experts and business organizations have begun to analyze the causes of this phenomenon. The goal is to find effective measures that will allow for the reduction of these figures, improve worker health, and guarantee the stability of the labor market in the coming months.
