The data center sector in Spain warns of difficulties with the new decree
The technology sector in Spain is currently in a state of debate following the recent implementation of regulations affecting data centers. Begoña Villacís, an executive at the industry association, has pointed out that although investor interest in our country remains high, the new rules imposed in regions such as Aragon present technical challenges that are very difficult to meet.
The main point of conflict lies in the capacity of the electrical grid and the management of the infrastructure required for these facilities. According to the association, the current decree does not align with the real needs of companies operating in this field. Although no company has canceled its investment plans for the moment, there is growing concern regarding the long-term viability of the projects.
Data centers are fundamental for the development of artificial intelligence and cloud data storage. Spain has positioned itself as a strategic hub in Southern Europe for this infrastructure, but the lack of coordination between administrative requirements and the technical capacity of the grid could hinder this growth.
The association is now requesting a more open dialogue with public administrations to adjust the regulations. The goal is to find a balance that ensures electricity supply and sustainability without jeopardizing Spain's competitiveness against other European countries that are also competing to attract these technological investments.
