José María Aznar draws a line between the Partido Popular and Vox
Former Prime Minister José María Aznar has made a recent public appearance that has sparked an intense political debate in Spain. In his statements, Aznar sought to clearly differentiate the patriotism defended by Alberto Núñez Feijóo, leader of the Partido Popular, from the political style proposed by Santiago Abascal, leader of Vox.
During his speech, the former leader stated that Feijóo does not need to resort to exaggerated symbols to demonstrate his love for the country. According to Aznar, the leader of the Partido Popular practices a patriotism based on management and responsibility, moving away from the more theatrical displays that, in his view, the far-right party employs.
Aznar's criticism focused specifically on Abascal's public image. The former president made ironic remarks about the Vox leader's attitude, noting that there is no need to "dress up as a captain of the Tercios" to boast about being Spanish. With these words, he sought to emphasize that national sentiment should not be confused with symbolic or historical gestures that, in his opinion, are unnecessary in current politics.
This stance by Aznar comes at a key moment for the Spanish right, which is looking to define its strategies ahead of future electoral challenges. While the Partido Popular attempts to consolidate a moderate center-right profile, the relationship with Vox remains a subject of constant analysis and tension within the conservative spectrum.
The statement has been interpreted by analysts as an attempt to mark territory and strengthen Feijóo's profile against his competitors. For now, Aznar's words have once again brought the question of how patriotism should be expressed in contemporary Spain to the forefront.
