Asturias considers eliminating 24-hour medical shifts
The Ministry of Health of the Principality of Asturias has begun working on a plan to eliminate 24-hour medical shifts. This initiative arises following constant requests from professionals in the sector, who believe that such long working days can affect both their own health and the quality of care patients receive.
The main reason for this potential change is pressure from young doctors. This group has expressed exhaustion and threatened to call for new strike days if their working conditions are not improved. For many professionals, working an entire day without rest is a practice that must be transformed to adapt to current times.
To carry out this transition, health authorities are already negotiating with hospital managers and department heads. The goal of these meetings is to design new organizational models that allow all health center needs to be covered without resorting to such extensive shifts.
However, finding a definitive solution is not a simple task. Hospital managers must ensure that centers continue to function correctly during the night and on weekends. For this reason, alternative formulas are being sought to achieve a balance between the necessary rest for doctors and the safety of citizens.
This debate is not exclusive to Asturias, as other regions in Spain are also analyzing how to modernize the healthcare system. The elimination of 24-hour shifts would represent a historic change in the organization of public medicine, prioritizing worker well-being and service efficiency.
