A new study analyzes the situation of young Spaniards abroad and their plans to return
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Spain, in collaboration with the Ministry of Migration, has recently presented the results of ‘Trayectorias’ (Trajectories). This study analyzes in detail the lives of young Spaniards living outside the country and explores their expectations regarding a possible return to Spain in the future.
According to the data collected in the survey, young Spaniards are spread across the world, although some destinations are more popular than others. Among the main countries of residence, the United States stands out, where 9.2% of those surveyed live, followed by the United Kingdom with 8.2% and Belgium with 7.9%. These places remain the preferred destinations for those seeking new professional opportunities.
The main objective of this report is to better understand the reasons that lead young people to emigrate and what conditions they need to consider returning home. The study focuses not only on statistical figures but also delves into the personal experiences and challenges these citizens face when living far from their family and social environment.
A key point of the analysis is the desire to return. Many of these young people maintain a very strong emotional bond with Spain, but their decision to return depends on practical factors. Economic stability, access to quality jobs, and the possibility of a good work-life balance are the most important elements they consider before planning their return.
In conclusion, the ‘Trayectorias’ study offers an updated and necessary insight into current youth emigration. The results will allow Spanish institutions to develop better policies to support citizens abroad and facilitate their reintegration into the national labor market. It is a fundamental step toward valuing and recovering the young talent residing beyond our borders.
