Mexico commemorates the victims of the 1985 and 2017 earthquakes
Every September 19, Mexico remembers two of the most devastating earthquakes in its recent history. On this date, the country organizes official acts and national drills to honor the victims of the earthquakes that occurred in 1985 and 2017, events that deeply marked Mexican society.
In the Coyoacán borough, Mayor Giovani Gutiérrez Aguilar led a solemn ceremony to remember those who lost their lives in these tragedies. During the event, authorities highlighted the importance of keeping the memory of the deceased alive and reflecting on the territory's vulnerability to natural phenomena.
The main objective of these commemorations is to strengthen the culture of prevention. Mexican authorities insist that education and citizen preparedness are fundamental to reducing risks and knowing how to act correctly in the event of a seismic emergency.
In addition to the tribute acts, the country carries out a national drill. This exercise allows for the testing of evacuation protocols in public buildings, schools, and businesses, ensuring that both authorities and the population are better prepared to face future natural disasters.
Although these events occurred in Mexico, the importance of seismic prevention is a topic of global interest. The ability to respond to natural disasters remains a challenge for large cities around the world, reminding us of the need for safe infrastructure and a well-informed citizenry.
