Caregiver investigated for stealing jewelry from elderly people in Galicia
The Civil Guard is investigating a 45-year-old woman in Santiago de Compostela for alleged crimes of theft and mistreatment. The suspect worked in nursing homes, where she supposedly took advantage of her position of trust to take valuables from the residents.
According to the authorities, the woman used moments of greater intimacy, such as personal hygiene or feeding, to commit the thefts. As the person in charge of caring for the elderly, she had direct access to their belongings without initially raising suspicion among her colleagues or family members.
The investigation revealed that the woman pawned jewelry worth more than 12,000 euros in different establishments. These pieces belonged to several elderly people who lived in the centers where she worked. In addition to the thefts, the police are also analyzing possible cases of mistreatment that occurred during the time the woman was employed.
The case began at the beginning of last March, when officers from the Milladoiro Main Post, in the municipality of Ames, detected irregularities. After receiving several reports about the disappearance of valuable objects, the Civil Guard launched an operation to identify the person responsible and locate the sold jewelry.
Currently, the investigation remains open to determine if there are more victims affected by these actions in other residences in the area. This event has generated great concern among the families of the residents, who are calling for improved security controls to protect the most vulnerable people.
