The Government approves the Torrellano bypass to improve rail connectivity in Alicante
The Government of Spain has given the green light to the Torrellano bypass project, a key piece of infrastructure for the province of Alicante. This work will allow for the removal of the current railway line that runs along the coast, a long-standing demand from residents and local administrations seeking to modernize mobility in the area.
The main objective of this project is to integrate the Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández Airport into the commuter rail network. Currently, the airport is one of the most important in the country by passenger volume, but it lacks a direct rail connection, forcing users to rely on buses or private vehicles.
In addition to improving access to the airport, the Torrellano bypass will allow for the liberation of the Alicante city waterfront. The removal of the current tracks will facilitate the creation of new public spaces and improve the quality of life for residents by eliminating the physical barrier that the railway poses in coastal areas.
Authorities have noted that this action is fundamental to promoting sustainable transport and reducing traffic on the roads leading into the city. It is expected that the new infrastructure will not only benefit tourists, but also workers and residents who need to travel daily between Alicante and Elche.
The project is now entering a phase of technical development and tendering. Although the exact timelines for the completion of the works have not yet been confirmed, the announcement represents a decisive step toward transforming the public transport system in southeastern Spain.
