32 cyclists killed in 2024
Despite the decline in the number of accidents in Austria during 2024, 32 cyclists died, including 20 who were riding electric bikes (E-Bikes). The country also witnessed 7 fatal accidents involving electric scooters (E-Scooters) and 47 pedestrian fatalities. These figures prompted authorities to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the bicycle police efforts.
The bicycle police, established in 2023, is now active in all Austrian states. This unit consists of 422 officers who ride bicycles, including 165 in the capital Wien (Vienna). Their equipment includes 228 bicycles, of which 62 are electric.
The tasks of the bicycle police focus on improving traffic safety, and they recorded more than 12,000 administrative violations (Verwaltungsanzeigen) and 13,213 direct fines (Organmandate) last year.
Interior Minister Gerhard Karner of the ÖVP party emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety of all road users, whether they are pedestrians, cyclists, or drivers.
He confirmed that the bicycle police represent a "cornerstone" in this effort, adding: "We must do everything we can to make traffic safer."
