Austrian receives unemployment benefits and travels to Thailand for weeks

A 31-year-old Austrian man from the eastern Styria region appeared before the district court in Weiz after it was proven that he traveled abroad several times while receiving unemployment benefits, without informing the labor market office, in clear violation of social assistance rules.

According to what was presented in the court session, the defendant was receiving unemployment benefits, but he traveled abroad during three consecutive winter seasons, including trips to Thailand, and spent long weeks away from Austria without providing any official notification, despite the obligation to report when leaving the country while receiving benefits.

The court clarified that the labor market office demanded the defendant to repay a total amount of 3,565.88 euros, which is the sum of the benefits he received during periods of being outside the country without permission. The violation was discovered after receiving an anonymous report, prompting the authorities to open an official investigation.

Flight data accurately showed the dates of the defendant's travel and return, which constituted conclusive evidence before the court. The judge confirmed that tracking this data has become easy today thanks to widespread digital transparency, and that compliance with reporting is a prerequisite for continuing to benefit from social assistance.

The accused admitted to the charges against him, and the court issued a ruling imposing a fine of 1,200 euros, considering that the penalty falls at the minimum of the legal framework due to his confession and the absence of any criminal record. The judge confirmed that the ruling is not final yet, taking into account the previous behavior of the accused and his cooperation with the judiciary.
