New guidance to help LGBTQ refugees in Sweden
Researchers at Uppsala University have developed a new practical guide for LGBTQ individuals seeking asylum in Sweden. The purpose is to provide better support to individuals with different sexual orientations, gender identities, and gender expressions during their time in the Swedish reception system.
The asylum process can be very challenging for LGBTQ refugees. Many come from countries where their identity is criminalized or socially unacceptable. The new guide is created to help both the applicants themselves and the authorities working with their cases to understand the specific needs and rights that exist.
The project is based on a dialogue between research, policymakers, and practitioners who meet asylum seekers in their daily work. By combining legal knowledge with social understanding, the hope is to create a safer and more legally secure process for all parties involved within the welfare system.
This guidance is an important step toward improving the integration and treatment of vulnerable groups in Sweden. By spreading knowledge about LGBTQ issues within asylum law, the researchers want to contribute to creating a more inclusive society where human rights are respected regardless of background.
