Research vessel has run aground off Möja
A 37-meter-long research vessel has run hard aground off Möja in the Stockholm archipelago. The accident occurred during the night leading into Sunday, and the vessel is currently located very close to land.
The vessel belongs to the Geological Survey of Sweden (SGU), a government agency that, among other things, maps the seabed. At present, it is unclear what caused the grounding or if anyone was injured in connection with the incident.
The rescue services and the Coast Guard have been working on the situation throughout Sunday to assess the condition of the vessel. There is concern regarding potential leaks, but the authorities are working to secure the site and prevent damage to the environment in the sensitive archipelago area.
The investigation into how the accident occurred has now begun. The authorities will conduct technical examinations to understand why the vessel ended up outside the safe shipping lane and ran aground.
