Lower fuel taxes make Sweden a destination for foreign trucks
The government and the Sweden Democrats have recently implemented several reductions in taxes on petrol and diesel. The purpose of these decisions has been to reduce costs for individuals and companies that rely on road transport in their daily lives.
One of the consequences of the lowered taxes is that the price at Swedish petrol stations is now lower than in many of our neighboring countries. This has led to Sweden becoming a so-called fuel oasis, where foreign transport companies choose to refuel their heavy trucks when driving through the country.
During the period between May 1 and September 30 of this year, the energy tax on fuel was reduced further. This measure is part of the government's long-term strategy to keep fuel prices down, a policy that has been implemented in several stages since 2023.
This development raises questions about how the Swedish fuel market is affected when foreign actors take advantage of the lower prices. While many Swedish motorists welcome the lower costs at the pump, authorities and experts are closely monitoring how this affects both state revenues and total fuel consumption in the country.
