The Moderate Party proposes a faster path to Swedish citizenship
The Moderate Party has presented a new proposal that could make it easier for certain individuals to become Swedish citizens. The party wants to introduce a so-called fast track, where the waiting time to obtain citizenship could be shortened from the current eight years to five years.
The proposal comes just a few months after the government and the Sweden Democrats implemented several tightenings of the rules for citizenship. The previous changes have focused on making the requirements for becoming a Swedish citizen stricter, including requirements for self-sufficiency and proficiency in the Swedish language.
According to the Moderate Party, the idea behind the new fast track is to reward individuals who have established themselves well in the labor market and who have good knowledge of the Swedish language. By offering a shorter path to citizenship, the party hopes that more people will feel motivated to integrate more quickly into Swedish society.
The proposal has sparked discussion in the political debate. Critics argue that it is unclear to propose relaxations so soon after having worked to make the rules more difficult. At the same time, proponents see it as a way to attract and retain the skilled labor that Sweden needs.
It is still unclear how the proposal will be received by the other parties in the government coalition. For the proposal to become reality, continued discussions and negotiations within the government are required before it can become a concrete legislative proposal.
