More Swedes need care for obesity – but many are not receiving help
An increasing number of people in Sweden are being diagnosed with obesity, which means they require medical assistance. Even though effective treatment methods are available today, new statistics show that the healthcare system is not reaching everyone who needs it.
Experts point out that obesity is a chronic disease that requires long-term follow-up and support. Although knowledge about the disease has increased within the healthcare sector, there are still significant regional disparities in the country regarding access to treatment.
One reason why healthcare is insufficient is that resources are not always prioritized for this patient group. Many patients find it difficult to get an appointment with a specialist, even though early intervention can prevent serious secondary illnesses such as diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.
To improve the situation, more equitable care is now required across all of Sweden. The goal is for more people to gain access to both medical treatment and lifestyle support, so that they can receive the help they are entitled to in order to improve their health.
