New drone facility in Malmö to accelerate technology development
A new facility for testing drones has opened in Malmö. The initiative comes from a company that felt it was too difficult and complicated to test new technology through existing government channels, such as the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV).
The background to the project is a frustration over how slow the processes for testing new technology often are in Sweden. The company behind the venture believes that the current system for innovation is too bureaucratic, which causes the development of new technology to take an unnecessarily long time.
By building their own facility, the company hopes to create a more efficient environment for testing. This will enable both themselves and other actors to evaluate drone technology more quickly in a controlled environment without having to wait for drawn-out approvals from authorities.
The investment in Malmö is seen as an example of how private actors are taking matters into their own hands to drive technological development forward. It remains to be seen how this initiative will affect the cooperation between technology companies and government agencies in the future.
