New political party wants to make Norrland independent
A new political party has been formed with an unusual goal: to make Norrland an independent state. The party, which calls itself the Norrland Party, argues that the northern part of Sweden is being forgotten by decision-makers in Stockholm. They believe that the resources from Norrland's nature, such as timber and electricity, should remain in the region instead of being sent south.
The founders behind the party believe there is significant dissatisfaction in northern Sweden. They point out that distances to hospitals and schools are increasing, while infrastructure is not being sufficiently prioritized. By becoming their own country, they hope to be able to control their own economy and natural resources in a way that benefits those living in the north.
Despite the ambitious goals, many are questioning how independence would work in practice. Breaking away a part of a country is a complicated legal process that requires major changes to the constitution. Experts believe it is very difficult to implement, but the party itself believes they have a good chance of sparking debate and gaining the voters' attention.
The party is now planning to run in upcoming elections to spread its message. They hope to get representatives into both municipal and regional councils to push the issue of regional self-governance. It remains to be seen how voters in northern Sweden will receive the proposal to leave the Swedish union.
