Liberal Party leader in notable linguistic slip-up on the radio
Liberal Party leader Simona Mohamsson recently found herself in the spotlight following a linguistic slip-up during an interview on Radio Sweden. During the party leader debate, she was set to discuss Swedish values, but chose a phrasing that attracted significant attention.
In an attempt to express herself in English, Mohamsson used the phrase “Swedish values is the shit.” The expression is a Swenglish direct translation that, in colloquial speech, can be interpreted in two completely different ways. While she likely meant that Swedish values are very good, the expression in English can also be perceived as meaning that something is bad or worthless.
The incident has spread rapidly on social media and has been reported by several news outlets, including Dagens Nyheter. Many listeners have reacted to the unexpected phrasing, which has become a topic of conversation due to the comedic contrast between the formal subject matter and the informal use of language.
It is not uncommon for politicians to make linguistic mistakes during live broadcasts, especially when they attempt to switch between languages. So far, the Liberal Party has not provided an official comment on the incident, but the clip from the radio interview continues to be shared widely by listeners across the country.
