Homeowners can get 60,000 kronor from Monday

Applications for Sweden's renewed home energy grant open on Monday 1 September. The scheme, which the government has named Villaeffekten, covers 30 percent of the material costs of measures that reduce a house's energy use, up to a maximum of 60,000 kronor per house. Around 300 million kronor a year has been set aside until the end of 2030, and applications are handled in the order they arrive regardless of which year they were submitted.

The conditions are narrow and worth checking before you plan anything. The property must be a one- or two-family house with a value year before 1990, you must own it wholly or in part, and you must intend to live in it permanently once the work is finished. That means the grant is tied to owning your home: if you rent, whether privately or from a municipal housing company, you cannot apply, and neither can your landlord claim it on your behalf for your benefit. Any grant already paid out under the previous round, which ran from 2023 to 2025, counts towards the same 60,000 kronor ceiling.

The money is not paid in advance. You apply first, then carry out the work, then submit a separate request for payment to the county administrative board where the house is located. You can apply more than once, but payment can be made on at most two occasions and the combined total cannot exceed the ceiling. An application must normally arrive within six months of the work starting; for work begun between 17 October 2025 and 31 August 2026 the deadline is 28 February 2027 instead.

Applications go through Boverket's e-service, and you log in with BankID, Mobile BankID, eIDAS or Freja eID Plus. If you own a house and do not yet have a working e-identification, that is the thing to sort out this weekend rather than on Monday morning, because without it you cannot start the application at all. Your municipality's energy and climate adviser gives free, independent advice on which measures are worth doing and can be asked before you commit to a contractor.
