Drone saved life during cardiac arrest in Sweden
A man in Sweden has survived a cardiac arrest thanks to a rapid intervention by a defibrillator delivered by drone. The technology allowed the equipment to reach the patient in just three minutes, which was significantly faster than an ambulance would have managed.
When an alarm regarding a cardiac arrest is received by SOS Alarm, a drone can be dispatched automatically. The drone flies directly to the location where the patient is and lowers a defibrillator using a wire. This allows people on the scene to begin life-saving treatment before medical personnel have arrived.
In this specific case, the technology worked exactly as planned. The patient quickly gained access to the defibrillator, which was crucial in saving his life. The experience shows how new technology can play an important role in Swedish healthcare by shortening waiting times during acute emergencies.
The project involving drone deliveries of defibrillators is part of an initiative to improve survival rates for cardiac arrests outside of hospitals. Since every second counts during a cardiac arrest, drones are seen as a valuable complement to traditional ambulance services in Sweden.
