Sweden wants to stop Russian tourists in the EU
Sweden and several other countries within the EU now want to stop Russian tourists from traveling to Europe. The government considers it problematic that hundreds of thousands of Russian citizens can vacation in the EU while the war in Ukraine continues. The issue has become an important political discussion throughout the union.
The Swedish government, together with countries such as Estonia, Latvia, and Finland, has raised the issue in the EU. They believe that a joint decision is required for a ban to work effectively. If only one country stops issuing visas, tourists can instead enter via another country and then move freely within the Schengen Area.
Currently, it is difficult for Russians to fly directly to the EU due to aviation sanctions. Despite this, many instead travel by bus or car across the border to neighboring countries like Finland. From there, they can then fly on to popular tourist destinations in southern Europe, something that Sweden now wants to put a stop to.
However, not all EU countries are in complete agreement regarding a total ban. Some countries, including Germany, have previously expressed hesitation. They argue that it is important for Russian citizens who are critical of their government to still have the opportunity to visit Europe or leave their home country.
The issue of tourist visas will continue to be discussed at upcoming meetings between EU foreign ministers. For Sweden's part, it is about showing solidarity with Ukraine and increasing political pressure on Russia by limiting the opportunities for Russian citizens to travel for pleasure.
