AI could make smartphone apps redundant in the future
The tech world is facing a major shift as artificial intelligence (AI) begins to take over functions that previously required specific mobile apps. While major American companies like Apple and Google are primarily focused on adding AI tools to their existing systems, we are seeing a different development in China.
In a new analysis, tech expert Mike Elgan writes that Chinese companies are now working to completely replace traditional apps with AI solutions. Instead of the user needing to open an app to book a trip or order food, an AI assistant can perform the entire task directly via a conversation or a simple command.
This development means that the user's interaction with the phone could become significantly simpler. If the technology becomes standard, the need to download and manage hundreds of different apps on one's smartphone could decrease drastically. It is a change that could affect how we use our phones here in Sweden in the future as well.
Although the technology is currently developing fastest in China, the rest of the world is following the progress closely. The question is whether Western tech giants will follow suit and let AI take over the role of apps, or if we will continue to use apps the way we do today. It remains to be seen how this technology will shape the digital everyday life of the future.
