SD demands nearly half of ministerial posts in the event of an election victory
The Sweden Democrats (SD) are aiming for a very important role in a future government. If the right-wing block wins the election in September, the party wants significant influence over Sweden's politics. Party leader Jimmie Åkesson now says that the party demands nearly half of all ministerial posts if they achieve a majority together with the other center-right parties.
This demand is a clear sign of SD's growing ambitions. Previously, the party has primarily served as a support party, but now they want to sit at the table where the most important decisions are made. Åkesson argues that the party's size in the Riksdag should be reflected in how many ministers they are allowed to have in a future government.
The right-wing block currently consists of the Moderate Party, the Christian Democrats, the Liberals, and the Sweden Democrats. For these parties to be able to govern Sweden together, they must agree on how power is to be distributed. Since SD is one of the largest parties in the block, they hold a strong position in the upcoming negotiations.
However, giving the Sweden Democrats so many seats in the government could prove to be a challenge for the other parties. The Liberals, in particular, have previously expressed hesitation regarding too close a collaboration with SD. Discussions about ministerial posts and political priorities are therefore expected to become a central part of the election campaign in the coming months.
The election in September looks set to be very close between the two political blocks. How the voters cast their ballots will ultimately determine whether Jimmie Åkesson's demands become a reality or not. Regardless of the outcome, it is clear that the Sweden Democrats are now demanding to take significantly greater responsibility for the country's governance than before.
