Sweden wants to ban Russian tourists across the EU

Sweden and several other EU countries now want to stop Russian tourists from traveling to Europe. The issue is currently being discussed within the EU as the war in Ukraine continues. Many politicians believe it is wrong that Russian citizens can vacation in Europe while Russia is attacking a neighboring country.

Despite the economic sanctions against Russia, hundreds of thousands of Russian tourists have traveled to EU countries recently. Since air traffic between Russia and the EU is halted, many instead travel by bus or car across the border to countries like Finland and Estonia. From there, they can then travel onward to other popular destinations in Europe.

The Swedish government believes that a common solution for the entire EU is needed. If only one country stops visas, tourists can easily enter via another country. Sweden therefore wants the EU to stop issuing tourist visas to Russian citizens altogether, but with certain exceptions for things like family visits or journalists.

However, there are differing opinions on the proposal within the union. Some countries, such as Germany, are hesitant about a total ban. They argue that all Russian citizens should not be punished for what their government does. They are also concerned that a ban could make it more difficult for people who actually need to flee the Russian regime.

The issue will be discussed further at the next meeting of EU foreign ministers. It is not yet clear whether all member states will be able to agree on a joint decision. For Sweden, the goal is clear: to increase pressure on Russia by limiting the opportunities for Russian citizens to travel freely in Europe.
